It has been a while since I visited River Terrace Chalet & Cafe, Ulu Yam. I discovered this wonderful place thanks to my good friend, Jess. We’ve been to River Terrace Chalet & Cafe together twice.
River Terrace Chalet & Cafe is a privately owned riverside property in Ulu Yam. This hidden gem, nearly an hour away from Kuala Lumpur city centre, opens its doors to anyone looking to unwind in nature. Day trips and overnight staycations are welcome.
In this post, I’ll share about our Christmas picnic at River Terrace Chalet & Cafe in 2023. Sure, it was a couple of years back, but it’s still relevant. Keep reading.
A Nice Spot To Escape the City
River Terrace Chalet & Cafe is a great spot to relax in nature and escape the hustle and bustle of city life. What I like about this place is that it is spacious enough for everyone and much quieter than the parks nearby. Of course, River Terrace Chalet & Cafe can also get crowded and noisy when big groups are present.

As far as I can remember, the river at River Terrace Chalet & Cafe was clean. However, there are many rocks in the river – big and small – so it’s wise to exercise caution when entering the river. The rapid river flow can easily push you to the rocks.
Some parts of the river are shallow, making it perfect for kids or non-swimmers. Even so, please be extra alert if you’re travelling with small children.
Location: Lot PT 10621, Jalan Ulu Yam, Sungai Ulu Yam Perdana, 44300 Hulu Yam Bharu, Selangor, Malaysia.
Day Trips and Overnight Stays Are Welcome
Overnight stays, short visits, and picnics are welcome. One thing to remember: the property may close its gate during high traffic. So it’s best to contact the management beforehand.
Apart from chalets, the property also offers gazebo and barbecue equipment rentals. Guests can pitch a tent on-site, too. I have yet to spend the night at River Terrace Chalet & Cafe – it might be worth considering.

Here are the rates for their rental services:
- Chalets: starting from ~RM100 per night (some units offer air conditioning)
- Gazebos: ~RM60
- Barbecue sets: ~RM50
- Campsites or tent pitches: ~RM50
Plenty of Space for Everyone
As mentioned earlier, I have been to River Terrace Chalet & Cafe twice. On both occasions, I had fun picnics. My friends and I also did some karaoke by the river. Yes, we brought along our own karaoke set. I can always rely on my friend Jess for that.

Now, is it okay to do karaoke? Apparently, it’s acceptable there. Furthermore, I believe we didn’t bother our neighbours since the river was loud enough to drown out our karaoke noise.
Likewise, the place is usually not crowded. There was enough space and privacy by the river for everyone.
Affordable Entrance Fee for Day Visits or Picnics
If you’re interested in visiting River Terrace Chalet & Cafe, note that the entrance fee is only RM5 per person. There’s free parking, but the space is limited. You’ll need at least 2 hours to enjoy your time at the river. As for my friends and me, we spent the whole afternoon there.

We brought food from home, like watermelons, fried rice, and some drinks. An ice-cream vendor came by and sold us vanilla ice cream. There were other flavours, too. How convenient.
There was a public toilet available on-site. It looked a little old. But it didn’t bother me. The entrance fee was pretty cheap, so I wouldn’t make a big fuss about that. But if I were to pay for an overnight stay, then questions regarding the state of the toilet might arise.
Final Thoughts
Would I return to River Terrace Chalet & Cafe? Absolutely. I think it’s a nice place to spend time alone or with other people. Plus, the river is clean. For an entrance fee of only RM5, that’s a deal I cannot look past. So, count me in anytime. I look forward to my next picnic!
